“Chiunque tu sia, o viandante, cittadino, provinciale o straniero, entra e devotamente rendi omaggio alla prodigiosa antica opera […] Osserva con occhi attenti e con venerazione le urne degli eroi onuste di gloria e contempla con meraviglia il pregevole ossequio all’opera divina e i sepolcri dei defunti, e quando avrai reso gli onori dovuti profondamente rifletti e allontanati”

Iscrizione situata all’entrata della Cappella San Severo (trad. it. di Maria Alessandra Cecaro).

“Whoever you are, traveller, citizen, local or stranger, come in and pay your homage to the prodigious ancient work of art […] Observe with alerted eyes the heroes’ urns full of glory and admire the divine opera and the departed. After paying your homage deeply think and go away”. (inscription at the entrance of the San Severo Chapel).

Varco is a project on location for the San Severo Chapel in Naples, Italy. My interest for the place firstly comes out of personal reasons. At the age of thirteen I used to live for three years in San Domenico Maggiore square ,very close to the Chapel, to study at the San Carlo’s ballet school. I would like to resume my link with the city and the past starting from the present and build a bridge between Naples and Rotterdam, the city with no heart where I have been living for three years. I would like to reflect on how a condition, emotional and of the body, changes by time. I ask myself what it means to leave something behind, what are the elements that constitute the memory of a place, how traces and facts during one’s life impress the body. The creative process will be thus a diary, a bridge between two cities, two inner states. Between me and Raimondo Di Sangro and his work, his manifesto and mine.
